Instructional Designer · Master’s in Education · Certified Accessibility Professional

Learning experiences designed to be accessible from the first draft.

I'm Dan — an instructional designer in higher education who blends evidence-based course design, digital accessibility, and workflow automation. Six years in the classroom taught me what learners need; a decade in ed-tech taught me how to build it at scale.

Module 01 — Selected Work

Projects that moved the needle

A sample of recent initiatives spanning course quality, training design, accessibility, and automation.

Course Quality Certification Program

Helped design and operate a tiered internal course quality framework grounded in Quality Matters principles — managing reviews, stakeholder communications, and certification for online courses across disciplines. Since launching in May 2026, 3 of the 10 courses I've reviewed are fully certified, 2 more are in progress, and 5 are in redevelopment ahead of their certification review.

Automated Certificate Workflow

Built an end-to-end certificate-of-completion pipeline for professional development courses, connecting Canvas, Microsoft Forms, Power Automate, SharePoint, and Excel — eliminating hours of manual processing.

Video Accessibility & Captioning Training

Designed training for instructors and subject matter experts (SMEs) on accessible video workflows — YouTube, Zoom, and Canvas Studio captioning plus transcript cleanup aligned to web accessibility standards (WCAG) — delivered with zero accessibility flags in the materials themselves.

Course Redesign for the AI Era

Led a redesign proposal for a first-year College Success course, refreshing it for AI-era relevance with hands-on activities that build students' critical AI literacy alongside study skills.

Stakeholder Consultation Feedback System

Designed a consultation feedback survey pipeline tied to institutional accreditation goals, using Microsoft Forms and Bookings to capture actionable data on instructional support services.

Employee Recognition Initiative

Created a digital kudos card program with automated delivery — an interactive, brand-themed tool built to full accessibility compliance (WCAG AA), proving accessible design and delight aren't at odds. Colleagues sent over 700 cards in the first week, spending an average of 30 minutes composing each one.

Module 02 — Expertise

What I bring to the table

Course Design
Backward design, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and Quality Matters standards applied to fully online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses — from blueprint to build in Canvas.
Accessibility
Certified accessibility practice (CPACC): auditing against web accessibility standards, remediating documents and multimedia, and training that helps instructors and SMEs build accessibly from the start.
LMS Administration
Canvas Certified Technical Admin — course shell architecture, student information system (SIS) integrations, and template systems that scale across programs.
Automation & Ed-Tech
Power Automate workflows, Microsoft 365 integrations, and practical AI adoption through institutional taskforce and community-of-practice leadership.
Training & Development
Professional development courses, workshops, and one-on-one consultations designed with a warm, options-forward approach that respects the subject matter expert’s knowledge.

Module 05 — About

From the classroom to the design studio

I spent six years teaching math in DC Public Schools before moving into instructional design — first at Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland, now in community college online learning. That classroom experience is the foundation of everything I design: I know what clarity, structure, and access mean to a learner, because I've watched what happens when they're missing.

Today my work sits where learning science, accessibility, and technology meet: reviewing courses against national quality standards, building automations that give educators their time back, leading digital accessibility from audit to remediation, and helping institutions think through responsible AI. Whatever the project, the goal is the same — learning experiences that work for everyone, backed by systems that keep working after I've moved on.

Let's connect

I'm always glad to talk instructional design, accessibility, and ed tech — whether you're a fellow designer, a subject matter expert, or someone curious about the field. Everything on this site links to a live demo, case study, or verified credential, so explore freely.
